How to: use calligraphy pens

Installing the cartridge
To install the cartridge, start by picking a nib to suit your writing style and unscrew the barrel. Next, insert the ink cartridge into the nib and push down until you hear a click, (you can push down on a table to press the cartridge into the nib), then screw the barrel back on and your calligraphy pen will be ripe and ready to use.

Choose the right paper
When it comes to calligraphy paper, choosing which paper you write on can make a real difference to how your lettering turns out. We recommend using a calligraphy book or smooth bleed proof paper. This will keep your pen work looking its best and stop any ink from bleeding through the other side. Keep some spare copy paper beside your work space to draw practice lines on, this will help start the ink flow, and it’ll save your calligraphy work too. Copy paper is also great for practicing on and developing your confidence, before you put pen to paper and use calligraphy paper.

Using a converter
A converter allows you to use ink from a bottle. Start by pouring your ink into your ink bowl and dip the end of your converter into the ink. Pull the tip upwards to fill the cartridge, then keep your cartridge held over the ink bowl to protect your work space, grabbing the nib with your other hand.
Push the converter into the nib until you hear a click and then screw the barrel on.
Using your practice copy paper, draw a couple of lines to start the ink flow before starting your project.

Writing with a calligraphy pen
Now you’re locked, loaded and ready to use your calligraphy pens. When it comes to writing with your calligraphy pen, hold the pen at around 45 degrees to the page and start writing. A handy tip: before writing, draw a baseline on your paper with a ruler and a graphite pencil to help when you’re practicing. This will make the proportion and shape of your letters easier to write and you can easily rub the lines out after.
Ink will only flow if you pull the pen downwards as you write, so it’s best to keep the direction of your strokes in mind when you’re just starting out. Using a calligraphy workbook is also a great way to hone your skills when you’re new to the game.
