Kayla holding a stripey patterned vase painting with art behind her

Hi! I’m Kayla, the artist behind Kayla Henley Art. I'm a part-time, self-taught artist with a deep love for colour and a bit of an obsession with it, really! I'm best known for my vibrant and joyful artworks featuring a variety of subjects including chickens, flowers, and fruit. I create with the intention of bringing a sense of joy and playfulness into people's special spaces.

One of my favourite ways to add character and interest to my work is through pattern. Patterns add an extra layer of depth, personality, and charm, especially in my chicken series. Each chicken I paint features its own unique pattern, giving it individual flair and pizazz. No two chickens are ever the same!

If you're looking to start incorporating more pattern into your artwork, here are some tips I’ve learned along the way:

1. Start small with simple art patterns

Begin with easy, approachable patterns like stripes, polka dots, squiggly lines, or checks. As your confidence grows, you can explore more detailed designs such as leopard print, florals, or even chinoiserie.

👉 Tip: I often sketch my patterns lightly in pencil before painting – it helps as a guide and gives me more control.

2. Use the right brushes

Different brushes create different effects. I personally love using the smallest round brush I can find, something like the Monte Marte ‘Detailer’ brush is perfect for fine lines and intricate patterns.

3. Let your colour palette lead

Colour is everything when it comes to pattern work. Try experimenting with 2-3 colours at a time. Think about contrast and complementary colour pairings from the colour wheel. Swatch different combinations together to see what works, you’ll be amazed at how much impact the right colours can have. There are truly no limits here, so have fun with it!

4. Using a sketchbook for practice

Before applying a pattern directly onto a final piece (like a vase, chicken, or background), practice first in your sketchbook. This helps build your confidence and allows you to explore shapes, marks, and layouts freely without pressure.

5. Consider placement and pattern repetition

The most visually appealing patterns are often simple elements repeated with rhythm and intention. Think about how your pattern interacts with the rest of your composition. Is it a focal point or a background element? Where do you want the viewer’s eye to land? Pattern can either lead or support, both are powerful.

6. Find inspiration everywhere

Nature is my number one source of inspiration, flowers, leaves, shells, feathers, and even the textures in tree bark can spark new ideas. Pinterest and Instagram are also great for discovering pattern styles and colour palettes that resonate with you.

7. Practice, practice, practice

As with any skill, the more you paint patterns, the better you'll get. Over time, your mark-making will become more confident, fluid, and uniquely yours. That’s certainly been my experience. Most importantly, have fun. Embrace the unknown, let yourself explore, and enjoy the flow that comes with creating.

Kayla’s tips really help us feel more comfortable with pattern artwork. It’s nice knowing the impact a simple pattern can have on a painting, so why not embrace the contrast and have a go?
