Let’s get to know oil painter and oil creator, Tamara Lo Tartaro (@tamara_lotartaro)! From realistic portraiture with a touch of surrealism to painting animals, she uses oils to capture the life and soul or her subjects. Find out more about how she became an artist down below!
What would you tell your younger self?

It might sound cliché, but I’d tell myself to trust the journey. You’re figuring things out, and that’s okay. Be patient and gentle with yourself along the way.
Growing up, did you come from a creative family?
Yes, both my parents are artists in very different ways. My mom painted furniture, and my dad is endlessly inventive, always exploring new ideas. It was inspiring and fun to grow up surrounded by all that creativity.
Where do get creative inspiration for your incredible oil paintings?

I think inspiration comes from the beauty I notice in women and their emotions, and from my love of animals and nature. I usually paint what draws me in and makes me feel alive.
If you got to be an animal for a day, what would you choose to be?
Probably a house cat, living somewhere cozy and well cared for, free to nap in the sun. That just feels like the best life.
What’s something you were nervous about starting, that turned out amazing?

Oil painting! I had a lot of doubts at first and wasn’t sure I could do it. Looking back, I can’t believe I waited so long to try. If something sparks your curiosity, it’s worth giving it a chance.
What’s an art medium that you love and one that is more of a challenge?
I’m in love with oils – they’re my favourite to work with. Watercolour, though, has always been a bit tricky for me.
How do you steer a creative project that isn’t working? Any advice for fellow creators out there?

When a project feels stuck, I usually step back and let it breathe, sometimes switching to another canvas. It helps to trust the process, be patient and kind to yourself. Each attempt teaches you something new.
What’s your fave time of day?
Evenings, definitely. There’s something about the quiet and the slower pace that feels really comforting.
If you had no time frame, what would you love to create?

Without any time limits, I’d spend my time on large oil paintings full of detail, exploring women, animals, and nature, and just losing myself in the process.
What does a Sunday afternoon look like for you?
Coffee, painting and my cat nearby, simple but perfect.
