Let’s get to know Australian artist, Kara Sargent (@karasargentart). Her creativity knows no bounds as she dabbles in anything from pouring and rock painting, to full-scale prop making! Read on to find out more about her approach to art, crafts, and seasonal creating.
We see you do creative workshops (so fun!). Can you tell us a bit about how you started them and a fave memory you have from running them?

They started because I realised people are craving ways to get creative, learn something new, and spend quality time with friends doing something a little different from the usual. One of my favourite moments is seeing that shift where someone starts with “I’m not creative…” and by the end they’re completely into it and genuinely proud of what they’ve made.
It also worked out perfectly that my brother opened Hang10 Distillery, where he makes amazing gin (among other things!), so I’ve been lucky enough to run the workshops there. And honestly, a Gin & Tonic while getting creative is a pretty great combination
If you were an animal… what would you be?
A kookaburra. A bit quirky, a little chaotic, and very classic Australian… just happy doing my own thing and not taking life too seriously.
If you had no time frame, what would you love to create?

An immersive art space full of colour, where people can come in, do workshops, learn new crafts, try fluid art, and just have a go without pressure. Somewhere that’s part gallery, part creative space, part experience… with colour everywhere and that slightly chaotic, hands-on energy.
Growing up, did you come from a creative family?
Not really, my family wasn’t that big into art. I kind of found my own way to it later on after having kids.
Where do you get creative inspiration for your artwork and workshops?

Everywhere. Nature, interiors, fashion, random colour combos out in the world. But honestly, a lot of it comes from just starting… once I’m in it, ideas tend to show up.
What would you tell your younger self?
Stop being such a perfectionist and stop comparing yourself to everyone else – just start! You learn so much more from actually doing things than you ever will from overthinking them.
What’s an art medium you love and one that is more of a challenge?

Love: fluid art. I like that it moves and does its own thing & you never really know how it’s going to turn out.
Challenge: probably prop making. Every year I handmake Halloween decorations for our house, and half the time it’s figuring out how on earth to actually make the idea work and what products to even use. I usually just bumble my way through it and hope for the best, but somehow, it’s led to being featured on Channel 7 News, having articles written about it, and most importantly, raising money for charity.
What’s something you were nervous about starting, that turned out amazing?
Putting my work out there publicly. It felt uncomfortable at first, but it ended up opening doors and opportunities I wouldn’t have had otherwise.
What are your tips on how to improve at art?

Make more bad art. Honestly. The more you create, the better you get. Just start, stop overthinking it, and don’t be afraid to make a mess along the way.
If you were a song, what would it sound like? Genre, era – we want the scoop!
Definitely a dance or house track. Think Dom Dolla, Fred Again.. or FISHER, anything with good energy that gets me moving and instantly lifts the vibe. Maybe a little nostalgic too… like Ministry of Sound.
