Acrylic Mediums Painting

Brittany Moscatt's texture painting with acrylics - fan

1. Mix your background colour

-     Start with Titanium White on your palette as your base, then slowly add small dabs of Hookers Green, Yellow Green, and Burnt Umber to create a muted sage green

2. Paint the canvas

-     Use the Artist Acrylic Brush to apply the background colour

-     Let the fast coat dry before painting a second layer

-     Keep any leftover paint - you'll use it again later!

3. Mark out your fan shapes

-     Cut a piece of string the length of your canvas's diagonal and tie one end tightly around a pencil

4. Draw the semi-circles

Using a string to draw semi circle shapes on the canvas

-     Hold the loose end of the string in one corner of the canvas

-     Pull it tight andplace the pencil tip about one-third of the way along the edge of your canvas

-     Keep the pencil vertical and trace a clean arc for a quarter-circle

-     Repeat on the opposite corner to create matching arcs

5. Prepare your paste

Light moulding paste mixed with different green shades on wood palette

-     Scoop out four heaped tablespoons of Light Moulding Paste onto your palette, keeping them spaced apart to mix your colours:

           -     Medium Sage Green - Small amount of Hookers Green

           -     Light Avocado Green - A little Yellow Ochre and a dab of the background green

           -     Pastel Yellow-Green - Small amount of Yellow Green and a touch of the background green

           -     Pale Sage Green - Yellow Ochre, Burnt Umber and a little of the background green

6. Pop your colour in containers

-     Scoop each colour into its own plastic container - the corners help you scoop up the paste for application

7. Apply the paste

Applying light texture paint in semi circle with dome palette knife

-     Start with your lightest colour. Use a flat, domed palette knife to scoop a small amount of paste

-     Press the paste along the fan shape and drag toward the centre of the semi-circle, creating a textured swipe

Texture Tip: Keep a light touch. Even pressure = even texture. Press too hard and you'll flatten your ridges

8. Add layers of colour

Built up layers of scalloped texture paint on green canvas

-     Continue applying paste row by row, moving from lightest to darkest as you go inward

-     Create two back-to-back rows per colour

Texture Tip: Clean as you go. Wipe your palette knife between each new colour to keep your swipes distinct

9. Repeat on the other side

-     Turn your canvas around and repeat the process in the second fan shape, mirroring the pattern for balance
