Canvas Craft Pads & paper Painting

How to: choose a painting surface

Decide on the medium
Before you choose a painting surface, have a think of what medium you’ll use.
Acrylic paints will go on just about anything, however, oil paints and watercolours need a little more consideration.

What can you use watercolour paint on?
Because watercolours use both paint and water, paper works best for this medium. Canvas can work, but if you’re looking for long-lasting art and wanting your watercolours to stay bright, then choose a watercolour paper with a high GSM.

What can you paint gouache on?
Similar to watercolour is gouache! Gouache paints are great for mixed media, but if you’re looking to create a gouache masterpiece, it’s best to use paper. For both mediums, turn to high quality paper with a high GSM to support the moisture.

What can I use oil paint on?
Because of their high oil content, stick to canvas or wood when it comes to using traditional oil paints. Cotton stretched canvases are great for oil paints, or if you’re still experimenting, try a canvas panel! If you’re in a creative emergency and need to use oils on paper, you still can, just be sure to prime with gesso beforehand.

What can you use acrylic paint on?
Acrylic paints are great, and they can be used on a range of surfaces, from canvas to wood, plaster, clay, stone and more! Canvas is a great choice when it comes to acrylic painting, try a stretched canvas for your next masterpiece. Or if you’re looking for alternatives to canvas, then try watercolour paper or wood. If you’re looking for an affordable painting option, then turn to a canvas pad or canvas panel.
