How to paint a dragon

1. Dragon outline drawing

Drawing dragon outline on paper

- To transfer the printable outline, shade the back, tape down, and retrace the linework

- Otherwise, you can sketch your dragon freehand

- Use a grid system if you’d like help with proportions

- Start with the head, mouth, teeth, tongue, and horns

- Draw the neck, limbs, feet, and talons

- Add the wing shape, tail, fins, and large belly scales

- Refine the overall proportions before moving on to finer details

2. Dragon scale drawing

Drawing scales in graphite for dragon sketch

- Lightly draw directional guide lines across the neck, back, belly, and legs

- Add overlapping scales following the flow of the body

- Vary the scales in size and shape throughout

- Continue the scale pattern down the tail and across the body

3. Pen outline

- Go over the entire dragon with a fine liner

- Use smooth confident lines to define scales and features

- Allow the ink to dry before painting

4. Watercolour shading

Greyscale tonal mapping of dragon painting

- Mix a watered-down dark grey using black paint

- Paint the shadow areas first using a small round brush

- Add a little warmth to the grey in some areas for variation

- Focus on the underside of the dragon and recessed areas that would naturally be shadowed

5. Building up colour

Painting leg of yellow and red dragon art

- Paint yellow onto the snout and body

- While the yellow is still wet, add little red for midtones creating a gradient

- Continue layering yellow and red across the dragon

- Allow the colours to softly merge on the paper

6. Painting wings

- Paint the wings using crimson

- Deepen darker folds and shadow areas gradually

- Keep some lighter areas visible for contrast

7. Metallic details

- Add gold paint into individual scales

- The shimmer will catch the light across the dragon

- Keep the metallic details scattered for balance

8. Final touches

- Refine darker shadows and outlines

- Build colour intensity where you want it

- Step back and check the overall balance of the artwork
