Say g’day to Australian artist and owner of @art_of_thyme_, Lisa Baker! Her specialty is bringing texture and art together to create calming coastal artworks. Find out more about what led her down the path of creating down below.
How did you get into creating?

I’ve always been creative. All through school, you could find me in the art block hanging out with my art teacher or working on something new. My high school electives were art, photography, and visual design, and even back then, all I wanted was to be an artist. But at the time, it felt like you had to go to university to make it in the art world – and that just wasn’t for me.
So instead, I spent over 20 years in retail management and hospitality. I’ve always been a people person – I love helping others and creating great experiences. Life got busy with work, marriage, and raising three boys, and for a while, art took a back seat.
Then in 2020, when my eldest started homeschooling, I stepped away from retail and realised I needed something just for me – a creative outlet. One day I picked up a palette knife and some textured medium, and that’s when my art journey really began. That’s also how Art of Thyme came to life – it’s a little play on words, because after all those years, I finally found time for art.
What’s your creative process like? Are you a planner or do you just jump in and learn as you go?
I’d say I’m a bit of both. I like to start by planning and visualising what I want to create – usually beginning with a sketch to make sure everything feels balanced and in proportion. Once I have that clear visual in mind, I dive straight in and let the creative process take over. I’ll often make changes and add new details as I go, and more often than not, the final piece turns out even better than I first imagined.
We can see you’re a fan of texture (us too) – what drew you to this art style?

Over the years, I’ve explored so many different art styles and mediums – from watercolours and acrylics to sketching, paint pouring, and resin. I loved the creative journey through each phase, but when I discovered textured art, I instantly knew I’d found my favourite. There’s something so special about adding that tactile element – being able to touch and feel the artwork brings it to life in a completely different way. I don’t think I’ll ever stray too far from textured art now; it just feels like home for my creativity.
How do you balance making time for art with everything else?

It’s definitely not easy – I won’t deny that! In the beginning, there were plenty of days where balance felt impossible. Some days were completely taken up with the kids and their commitments, and before I knew it, it was time to make dinner and I hadn’t even touched a paintbrush.
But over time, I’ve found my rhythm. As my art has grown, I’ve been able to create a bit more structure and now I’m so grateful to paint full time. My days are still full and life is busy – but honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
After the morning rush once everyone is where they need to be, I get a few quiet hours to create. That time grounds me and refuels me for the evening chaos that follows. I feel incredibly lucky to live this life – to have a supportive family and to wake up each day knowing I get to do what I love for a living. It still feels a little surreal, and I never take it for granted.
Do you have any advice for people who want to give creating a go but don’t know where to start?

My advice? Just start! It can feel overwhelming at first, but don’t overthink it. Do a little research on different textured mediums, take a class if there’s one nearby, or simply dive in and try it yourself. It’s all trial and error – there’s no “right” way to do it. Everyone has their own style and techniques, and the more you experiment, the more confident you’ll become. Textured art can be messy, but it’s also incredibly fun and rewarding!
If your personality was a flower, what would it be and why?
I’d say a sunflower! They represent happiness, positivity, loyalty, resilience, and strength. I love how they always turn toward the sun – it reminds me of looking on the bright side of life. Life has thrown plenty of unexpected challenges my way, but focusing on the small wins and staying positive has only made me stronger.
What’s something you’re proud of, that you don’t often get to talk about?

It might sound cliché, but it would have to be my three boys. I try to keep my socials focused on my art journey, but that’s really only a small part of who I am. I’m not entirely sure why I keep the two separate – I think as a mum, I just want to protect them. One of my children has a disability, and my protective instincts really go into overdrive there.
Motherhood has been a journey – sometimes challenging, always rewarding. My boys are 18, 15, and 8, and each has such a unique personality, full of quirks and qualities that amaze me every day. We’ve been tested as a family, but we’ve come through stronger than ever. I’d love to be able to open up more on a personal level through my socials someday, but I’m not sure I’ll ever fully get there – and that’s okay.
Do you have a fave memory since starting Art of Thyme?

My favourite memory – and really my favourite part of running Art of Thyme – has to be Market Days with my mum! She was the driving force behind getting them started and has been my number one supporter every step of the way.
Each market is a new adventure. We’ve shared so many laughs, faced our fair share of wild weather, and celebrated countless little wins together. These days, spending time as a mother-daughter duo is what I work hard for every day and what I look forward to the most.
Though sometimes it’s hard to fit in time for art, Lisa has shown us just how worthwhile it can be. Whether you’re still finding your style, or know exactly what you like, try to carve out some time for yourself and your creative expression.
