Say hello to Sydney artist and texture specialist, Madie Brunt (@my.sunrise.studio)! She uses icing-like paint and a palette knife to create seamless scalloped colour gradients on canvas. If you love mouthwatering colours and textured art, read on to get inspired!
Where do you turn for creative inspiration?

I think there’s inspiration everywhere around us and seeing the beauty in simplicity is special. My happy place is always by the sea, so if I'm feeling stuck or stressed. I’ll watch the sun rise over the water and it helps clear my mind.
If you were designing your dream creative space, what would it look like? Minimalist, maximalist, or somewhere in between?
I’d like to say minimalist… but realistically my art supplies would probably take over! The most important thing to me would be having a space that has beautiful sunlight – sunrise glow on a new project on the easel is magic!
When was the last time you got creative goosebumps?

I feel lucky that I get to experience this semi-often. I love that with social media, a world of beautiful artwork is so accessible, and I can see amazing creations and innovative new techniques.
How do you tackle art block?
Just start! I’m guilty of procrastinating and if I can’t visualise something fully, I sometimes put it off. Once I challenge myself to jump in and start, things take shape and evolve.
How did you discover your inner artist? Was creating something you always did, or did you find it later on?

I’ve always loved creating. From painting and drawing as a kid to making cards to sell to my mum’s hairdressing clients… but I did neglect giving my full attention to it. I studied art at high school and loved it but the whole ‘you can’t make a career out of art’ rhetoric saw me leave that passion behind until COVID, when I had the time on my hands to explore again!
Do you come from a creative family?
Not at all! No one was was particularly artistic growing up. In his retirement years, my late Grandad got into painting and woodwork. He’d sit in the shed carving wood for hours. Feel very lucky to have a some pieces of his artwork in my home.
What creative project were you a little unsure to start but turned out better than you hoped?

I think the first projects where I started using texture paste! My first few were AWFUL, but I jumped in anyway and pleasantly surprised myself when I tackled a larger canvas. Lots of learnings!
What’s your guilty pleasure?
Anything sweet! My weekend routine is grabbing a sweet treat from the markets before I start painting.
What’s your favourite season, and why?

Summer! Specifically, the first weeks of summer when you can feel it in the air, there’s happy energy about and everyone ‘reemerges’ again. I love that buzz!
You know how countries have national flowers? If you were a country, what flower would represent you?
That’s a tough one, I’d like to think something like a lily - they’re one of my favourites.
