Meet Queensland artist and workshop teacher, Tevai Retchless (@fifthunicorn.au), known for her fluid art classes and vibrant designs. We asked her loads of questions about what inspires her, her fave mediums, and creative journey so far. Read on to find out more!
What’s one art medium you’re comfy with and one you want to explore more?
I’m most comfortable with fluid art and acrylic pouring - it’s my passion and what I love sharing with others. I’m currently exploring abstract art and absolutely love the layering process. No rules apply to abstract art, just pure creativity and emotion.
Who are your creative cheerleaders?
My biggest cheerleaders are my amazing husband Daniel, daughter Tatiana, my friends and my Fifth Unicorn community who show up, create, and inspire me every day!
What’s your creative process like? Do you prefer to plan it out or jump in and learn as you go?
This has changed over the years. I used to lose sleep over planning out my creative projects and now I’m definitely more of a jump in and go with the flow type of artist! Art is all about letting go and embracing the unexpected, and that’s what makes it so special.
Do you have a fave or go-to Mont Marte product?
I love Mont Marte’s acrylic paints - they have such a smooth consistency, and the colours are always so vibrant!
How do you make time for creative projects?
Creativity is a non-negotiable for me, it’s how I express myself and unwind. Whether it’s working on commissions, prepping for workshops, or just playing with new techniques, I make sure to carve out time for it.
How do you tackle art block? What gets you creating again?
I remind myself that creativity isn’t about perfection - it’s about expression. When I feel stuck, I step away, take a break from it, or even go back to basics and create just for fun, with no pressure.
What 3 art supplies would you take to a deserted island?
1. Acrylic paints (because I can’t live without colour!)
2. Endless paint brushes
3. A never-ending canvas (because why limit creativity?)
Aside from acrylic pour projects and custom purse design, what other hobbies do you enjoy?
Aside making art, I love the outdoors, spending time near the water, time with family and friends and I am obsessed with seeking inspiration for anything creative. I also enjoy sharing the mental health benefits of art and helping others find joy through creativity.
Tell us, what' s your guilty pleasure?
I have a list of guilty pleasures outside of the creative world however, I could watch art tutorials for hours on end and also get lost in the art supplies aisle and convince myself I need one more shade of paint - or five!
Do you have a fave memory or moment from your creative workshops?
Every time someone walks in saying they’re “not creative” and then leaves with a piece they’re so proud of - it’s pure magic! Seeing their confidence grow is the best feeling.
