Acrylic Mediums Painting

Brittany Moscatt's texture painting with acrylics - flowers

1. Mix your background colour

-     Squeeze out a generous amount of Titanium White paint onto your palette

-     Gradually mix in small dabs of Pink, Brilliant Red, Yellow Ochre and a tiny touch of Burnt Umber to make a soft, pink-peach tone

Texture Tip: Save your background colour! You might need it later for touch-ups

2. Paint the canvas

-     Use the Artist Acrylic brush to apply the colour using long, smooth strokes

-     Make sure the coverage is even, going all the way to the edges and corners

-     Let the fast layer dry completely, then apply a second coat to create an opaque finish

3. Prepare your paste

-     Scoop five separate heaped tablespoons of Light Moulding Paste onto your palette, spaced apart for easy colour mixing

4. Mix your flower colours

-     Brittany mixed the following flower colours:

           -      Dusty Rose Pink - Small amounts of Pink, Brilliant Red and a touch of Burnt Umber

           -     Light Pastel Pink - A little Brilliant Red and Burnt Umber

           -     Orange-Pink - A little Pink, Brilliant Red and Yellow Ochre

           -     Mushroom Pink - A touch of Burnt Umber and Brilliant Red

           -     Pale Pink - A small bit of the orangey and mushroom pink paste mixed into the final dollop of paste

5. Pop your colour in containers

-     Scoop each colour into its own plastic container - the corners make scooping the paste easier!

Texture Tip: Plastic containers help keep colours tidy, save leftovers for touch-ups or other projects, and make scooping super easy

6. Add the mini flowers

-     Use a pointed, narrow palette knife and scoop a little mushroom pink paste

-     Dab a centre and six surrounding petals to form a mini flower. You don't need to be too precise - texture is the goal!

Texture Tip: Try using the side of your palette knife for thicker ridges and added dimension!

7. Add the bigger flowers

-     Switch to a wider palette knife, and add a small dollop of the orange-pink paste to your canvas as the centre of a new flower

-     Use the dusty rose pink paste for the petals, scraping the edge of your palette knife along the container to get a good dollop

-     Press the knife gently onto the canvas and lift slightly to create a 'peaked' petal texture

8. Repeat the process

-     Keep adding flower designs around the canvas, mixing and matching colours for variation

9. Decorate around the flowers

-     Use any leftover paste to add extra petals and decorative dots around your canvas

-     Play with placement - clusters of flowers or scattered petals work beautifully

Texture Tip: Don't stress mistakes! If something doesn't go to plan, scrape off the paste and touch up the area with your background paint
