How to: colour air drying clay with acrylic paint

The good news is that it’s quite easy to colour air dry clay with acrylic paint. This handy art hack also works with tempera and poster paints so it’s a great idea to try with your little artists too, or if you’re looking for a bright, bold colour.

Here’s what to do:

1) Cut off a chunk of clay from a slab or pull apart the amount you need.
2) Knead the clay to make sure it’s pliable.
3) Choose your paint colours (this is the fun part), then add a small amount of paint into the clay.
4) Knead the clay until the paint’s mixed in. It might be handy to wear gloves here, this step can get messy.
5) Once the paint is completely mixed in, you’re ready to start shaping and creating!

It really is that easy! If you’re looking to create a marble effect, you can leave the paint partially mixed in, with less kneading. The colour will lighten once it dries, so keep this in mind when mixing paint into your clay.

Don’t forget, your air hardening clay might take a little longer to dry. This is because there will be more moisture inside the clay, but don’t let that stop you from giving it a go!

So, get creative and see what you come up with! Try trinket dishes, Christmas ornaments, pot planters, incense holders, decorations or décor. Those are just a few things to make with air dry clay, but there’s plenty more! Check out these 12 DIY air dry clay projects to try.
