Drawing Painting Watercolour

How to paint a boat using drawing inks

Step 1: Drawing transfer

-     Start by shading the back of the template drawing with a 7B pencil

-     Flip the image over and tape it to the cotton watercolour paper

-     De-tack the tape slightly to prevent damage before applying

-     Use an HB pencil to trace the outlines carefully, capturing all fine details

-     Carefully remove the reference sheet to reveal the transfer

-     Use a Graphic Fineliner (0.3) to go over the details, creating crisp, permanent lines

Step 2: Line shading

-     Begin with the border, using either a ruler or freehand

-     Add line variations by adjusting pressure as you outline for a dynamic, lively feel

-     Hatch in the darker sections, focusing on areas where shadows naturally fall, such as the back of the boat

Step 3: Using masking fluid

-     Apply masking fluid to areas you want to keep white, like the foam on the water and the sun

-     Lightly dab the masking fluid to create a textured effect that mimics the movement of water

-     Let the masking fluid dry naturally – avoid using a hairdryer to prevent bonding issues

Step 4: Painting the sky

-     Mix Sunflower and Tangerine drawing inks with water

-     Apply a light-yellow wash near the horizon, gradually transitioning to a darker orange at the top

-     Flip the paper upside down for smoother blending

-     Add a hint of Cerulean Blue to the upper area to suggest depth

Step 5: Painting the water

-     Use watered-down Sunflower to add reflective warm tones near the boat

-     Mix Phthalo Green with water for the deeper areas, contrasting with the warm sky tones

-     Use short, choppy strokes to suggest waves, making the brushstrokes larger as you move down the page

Step 6: Watercolour sailing boat

-     Mix Sienna, Tangerine, and Black to create a dark brown for the boat’s shadowed areas

-     Use Sienna for the top trimmings, creating a mahogany wood look

-     For the sailor, mix Phthalo Blue and Black for the shirt, and Sienna with Tangerine for the skin tone

Step 7: Final touches

-     Once the ink is completely dry, gently remove the masking fluid with your fingers

-     Use a fine liner brush to add darker shades and details, reinforcing structure and enhancing contrast

-     To soften the sun, use a damp brush to wet the circle and around

-     Gently blot the water with a paper towel to create a gentle gradient

-     Add any final pen details with a Graphic Fineliner

Voila! You’re ready to hang or gift your warm, lively sailboat painting. What a peaceful project and final artwork.
