From storybooks to street art, foxes have captured imaginations for centuries – and it's easy to see why. With their sleek forms, fiery fur, and expressive eyes, they’re a favourite subject for artists in all kinds of styles and mediums. Whether you’re aiming for realism or something more whimsical, here are some fox art ideas to spark your next creative session.

1. Surreal fox

Dreamlike and layered, this piece takes a bold, imaginative approach. A fox leaps across the cloudy sky under a starry tail, with a bird companion perched on its back and bird houses floating about. This piece combines soft blends with bold texture, adding extra dimension to the fantasy scape. What would your surreal fantasy look like?

2. Watercolour studies

These two watercolour portraits keep things simple and striking. The clean outlines and vibrant blue backgrounds create strong contrast the warm reds of the fox pelts. Try exploring different fox poses or expressions using this study-like approach, great for practicing fur texture and colour control in watercolour.

3. Foxglove watercolour

Explore wordplay and forest growth by adding some foxgloves (the purple flowers) to your fox portrait! This nod to both the flora and fauna is a cool way to explore the forest setting. Try thinking outside the box for your next design – maybe draw a rhino meeting a rhinoceros beetles? An ox surrounded by ox-eye daisies? There’re so many possibilities to explore!

4. Fox scenery

Vibrant watercolour sets the scene for this captivating countryside view, with foxes nestled into a peaceful hillside. This piece is all about creating atmosphere by carefully blending the valley area to create a misty effect.  The suggestive shapes in the background and sharp detail in the foreground create a sense of distance and add to the weather. What setting would you paint foxes into?

5. Clay fox

Polymer clay sculpture of fennec fox in motion

Foxes aren’t just great to paint and draw – they’re fun to sculpt too. We moulded polymer clay to bring this fennec fox to life, using clay tools and paint to create the fur texture and expression. By making a custom armature, the fox is able to stay poised mid-stride, adding to the realism. Check out our in-depth tutorial on our site!

6. Acrylics on wood

With visible brush strokes on a natural wood background, this portrait strikes a great balance between painterly and detailed. The wood grain brings additional texture to the background and underpainting, complimenting the directional strokes of the fox’s fur. Have a go painting on wood for your next project!

Set in a glowing woodland, this fox snoozes atop a stack of patterned cushions under the moon. It’s playful, layered, and full of details that invite a second look. Start your next creation with some fairytale inspo – this piece was inspired by the fable of the princess and the pea.

Surrealism is all about objects and items being placed in an unusual setting and it can be really fun to create your own world!
